“Why I Aborted Sarkodie’s Baby” – Yvonne Nelson

Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson has revealed that she terminated rapper Sarkodie’s pregnancy in 2010 after a short relationship.

Yvonne made this known on Sunday, in her recently launched book, ‘I am not Yvonne Nelson’ at Peduase Lodge, Ghana.

Yvonne in the book revealed how their paths crossed with the rapper at a time when his future seemed uncertain.

In a chapter titled “A Hard Decision,” she said she found herself in a complex situation involving a rapper after he refused to take responsibility for the pregnancy.

She said she had to have an abortion because she is fatherless and did not expect to give birth to a child whose father refused to accept responsibility.

“I had gone for a pregnancy test to confirm what becomes the most obvious conclusion for a sexually active young woman who misses her monthly flow. I was with Karen. And when the test result was ready, I wasn’t strong enough to open it. She did and pronounced the verdict.

“Charlie, it’s there!” she exclaimed.

“On an ordinary day, I would have laughed out loud and it would have sparked a series of happy conversations and jokes. But it was no laughing matter. It was grim information that was capable of turning my world upside down. I was not solely responsible for the situation, so I called the man whose powerful seed had germinated in me, his name is Michael Owusu Addo, a renowned Ghanaian musician, better known as Sarkodie.

“Sarkodie was an aspiring musician with the potential to become one of the greatest artists in Ghana and beyond. At the time, however, the future seemed uncertain and his path through the maze of life still seemed too foggy to predict. Success was not guaranteed. He still lived with his mother and was not prepared to carry a burden while he was carried by his mother.

“I wouldn’t call what developed between us a serious relationship. I turned to people in the music industry. For the longest period of my life, music has allowed me to escape all the nasty things life threw at me. So, I liked his talent. We started talking and got closer, Closer.

“The first thing that struck me when he said no to continuing the pregnancy. I had grown up without a father in my life. I had often been reminded of how I had been mistakenly carried.

“I still wondered if the man whose name I bore was my father. How was I going to bring another human being into this world to live like me, someone whose father would reject him like Mr. Nelson had rejected me? If there was a way to spare someone else the trauma I was facing, why would I reject that option, especially when I wasn’t?

She further said that the abortion of the pregnancy was “one of the most regrettable mistakes of her life, adding that if the clock of life could be rewound to a younger self she would keep it.”
