Elizabeth Lawley, 33, and her unnamed 2-year-old son were found dead Wednesday night inside her father’s home in Wallace, a small town about 50 miles east of Coeur d’Alene along Interstate 90. A heavily pregnant Idaho mother shot her young son. her to death before shooting herself, police said.
“Preliminary investigation indicates Lawley likely killed her child and then committed suicide,” the Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office said. Lawley was approximately six months pregnant when she committed the apparent murder-suicide, police said.

Lawley’s father was the first to stumble upon the grisly scene, the Coeur d’Alene Press reported. Neighbors said he returned to her house around 6 p.m. and he assumed that her daughter and her grandson were napping in a separate room in the house. It wasn’t until 8:30 p.m. that she went to check on them and found their bodies.
“Honestly speaking, in my 19 years of service in Shoshone County, I have never seen the SCSO so grim, so devastated; We share many hugs and we share many tears. Today was an extremely difficult day for the family, for our office and for this community,” Sheriff Holly Lindsey said of the tragedy.
“I may just be lacking sleep, but I can’t stop thinking about how precious life is. “Kiss your spouse, hug your kids, call your parents and sibling(s) to talk to them, don’t take any of it for granted…not even for a minute.”
The apparent murder-suicide is the latest in a string of familicides sweeping the nation. Last week, Utah doctor Parth Gandhi killed her 16-year-old son and then himself inside her Psychedelic Research and Therapy office.
The nation is still reeling after Massachusetts mother Lindsay Clancy, who suffered from postpartum depression, strangled her three young children to death before attempting suicide. “Today was an extremely difficult day for the family, for our office and for this community. And I can only imagine what the family is going through,” the Facebook post read.
Wallace is a small town east of Coeur d’Alene along Interstate 90.
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death in the US and has been on the rise for the past decade, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Firearms are the most common method used in suicides, the CDC says.
