An ‘axe’ who attacked colleagues in a violent riot at a London hospital before shooting himself appeared in court today. Matteo Bottarelli, 43, is alleged to have chased his colleagues with a mattock, a large pick, through the grounds of Central Middlesex Hospital in north-west London.
The maintenance man is accused of stabbing one of his colleagues in the neck from behind and inflicting “multiple head injuries” on another. Botarelli was subsequently arrested by armed police officers outside the hospital, where it was discovered that he had non-life-threatening injuries believed to have been self-inflicted.

On the bench, dressed in a gray tracksuit and with a bandage around his neck, Bottarelli spoke to confirm his name and date of birth. He was charged with three counts of attempted murder and two counts of threatening violence with a bladed item. He was subsequently taken into custody until Tuesday June 27 when he will appear at the Old Bailey.
A Metropolitan Police spokesman said a man had injuries that were thought to be “life-changing for him” after the incident. Another of Botarelli’s colleagues escaped the violent rampage with minor injuries. The third victim did not sustain any injuries during the incident, which is not being treated as terrorism-related.
