On Wednesday, Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s office attempted to backtrack on the Alabama Republican’s statements about white nationalists serving in the military.
“Do you believe they should allow white nationalists in the military? We asked Tuberville. “Well, they call them that. I call them Americans,” Tuberville said.

Tuberville’s office released a statement to AL.com on Wednesday clarifying the senator’s comments.
“The quote from Senator Tuberville that is quoted shows that he was skeptical of the idea of there being white nationalists in the military, not that he thinks they should be in the military,” a spokesperson said in a statement. “He thinks the men and women in uniform are patriots. (Defense) Secretary (Lloyd) Austin seems to think otherwise, subjecting them to extremism training as his very first act in office. cost four million man-hours.”

On Thursday, Capitol reporters pressed Tuberville for his comments. He told them “you can’t have racists” on any team, and he claimed the Democrats are the problem, accusing them of painting all Trump supporters as white nationalists.
