As an anchor and reporter, he began his career as a journalist. Trey interned at CNN’s headquarters in Atlanta. Following that, the journalist worked for CBS stations KHOU in Houston, WBBM in Chicago, and WINK-TV in Fort Myers, Florida. Trey purchased the Naples Journal, a community newspaper, in 2005, which he eventually sold to the E.W. Scripps Company, the owner of the Naples Daily News.

Trey returned to WINK in 2007 after selling the Journal. He did, however, leave the station in 2009 to join WFSX-FM. Trey hosted a live 4-hour morning radio show there. In September 2016, the journalist returned to the channel as a morning host. Trey switched to afternoon drive time a year later. He has been hosting this time slot since then.

On March 28, 2017, Random House imprint Blue Rider Press published Trey’s book Democrazy, a True Story of Weird Politics, Money, Madness, and Finger Food.
