Tragically, a Scott County deputy lost his life while on duty Monday. The Fayette County Detention Center has now identified the individual accused of murdering him.
According to authorities, Deputy Caleb Conley, 35, was shot and killed during a traffic stop on I-75 at Mile 127.
Steven Sheangshang, 45, is currently facing multiple charges, as noted in his arrest citation. These charges include murder of a police officer, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, burglary, theft by unlawful seizure of an automobile, wanton first degree endangerment, and flight or first degree police escape.
After a shooting on Georgetown Road, Sheangshang was apprehended by police on Monday evening. According to the citation, Sheangshang is accused of shooting Deputy Conley during a traffic stop on I-75 and then fleeing to River Run Court in Georgetown.
It is alleged that he attempted to obtain transportation by forcing his way into a residence, brandishing a handgun at one of the occupants and forcing him to hand over his vehicle keys.
After leaving the residence in the stolen vehicle, Sheangshang reportedly headed for Lexington. According to the citation, he is alleged to have then shot another individual at a residence on Georgetown Road before stealing the victim’s vehicle around 5.50pm on Monday. Sheangshang was apprehended at a residence on Charles Avenue at 6:41 p.m. Monday, and during the arrest a .44 magnum revolver was discovered at the scene.
Deputy Conley, who served in the U.S. military for eight years and was a member of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office for four years, is survived by his wife and young children. His tragic death marks the first loss of an officer within the Scott County Sheriff’s Department.
