A Las Vegas, Nevada man accused of killing his wife made a chilling call to 911 after he failed to commit suicide last weekend, police say.
Shiva Gummi, 33, is charged with one count of open murder with a deadly weapon in the Saturday morning stabbing death of his wife, Gwendoline Amsrala, 28, at the couple’s residence.
The victim was found killed next to her husband on a mattress inside the home, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said. She had numerous injuries to her arms, abdomen, and throat.
Amsrala graduated from the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2022.
A GoFundMe has been started to help his family with funeral costs.
“The UNLV community wishes to express its sincere condolences for the loss of our dear colleague, physician and friend Gwendoline Amsrala, MD,” reads the fundraiser launched by the chief advisor to the women’s faculty. “She was tragically and suddenly taken from us before she was destined to pursue a rich and meaningful career in the service of her future patients.
“For those who knew her intimately, we will always remember her wonderful sense of humor, her strength of spirit, her leadership and her charming smile. As we remember and celebrate her life, this fundraising is an opportunity to care for her immediate family as she is survived by her mother and father. Gwen was passionately dedicated to providing for her parents, and so we have the opportunity to make Gwen’s wishes come true. .
In a separate statement, the UNLV Department of Internal Medicine expressed surprise and sadness at the sudden loss of another rebel.
“Our residence was shocked to learn of the passing of our beloved intern, Dr. Gwendoline Amsrala,” the statement read. “Gwen had graduated from Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV and rotated with our program as a medical student and stayed on as a resident. She was tragically and suddenly taken from us, and the world lost an incredible doctor who would have changed the lives of countless patients. Our program misses her contagious smile, her positive energy and the love she had for her family at work. We mourn the passing of our dear friend.
On Sunday, law enforcement announced that Amsrala’s husband had been charged – initially refusing to release his name, reports Henderson, Nevada-based Fox affiliate KVVU. The Clark County coroner confirmed the woman’s identity on Tuesday and said she died of multiple stab wounds, according to Las Vegas-based ABC affiliate KTNV.
The defendant was initially convicted in absentia as he suffered numerous serious injuries when law enforcement arrived, KVVU reported. Gummi’s injuries are still being treated and he was unable to appear in court, local NBC affiliate KSNV reported, citing court records. He is currently being held without bond and a status check is scheduled for May 2.
At the scene, police spoke to a third person who allegedly said the husband “was angry with Gwendoline after spending the night at a friend’s house who was drunk after a night of drinking,” according to the arrest report obtained by various local media. .
This report also contains a heartbreaking interaction between the suspected killer and the rescue worker on the other end of the line.
“I want to die, but I’m not dying,” Gummi told 911 dispatchers.
A dispatcher asked Gummi where his wife was.
To which he replied, “Beside me.”
Then the dispatcher asked him if his wife could help him.
Gummi replied, “She’s dead.”
