Putin told the Russian people today: “This is a campaign of criminal adventure. It is the equivalent of an armed mutiny.
“We will defend ourselves and push back against this hostile decision. We fight for the life and security of our citizens and our territory.
“It is a question of millenary history of Russia. Everything must be done to avert this danger.
It is an attempt to subvert us from within. It is a betrayal to those who are fighting on the front lines.
“It’s a stab in the back of our troops and the Russian people.”

Wagner’s leader, Yevgeny Prigozhin, said in a video released in the early hours of Saturday that his forces had reached the strategically important city of Rostov-on-Don.
A serious-looking Putin told the Russians, “What we are facing now is betrayal.”
The 70-year-old dictator warned: “Anyone who deliberately sets out on a path of treason will face inevitable punishment.
“The armed forces have received the appropriate orders.”
He continued: “As the President of Russia and Chief Marshal, as a Russian citizen, I am doing everything to repel this attack and ensure the freedom and safety of our citizens. Those who mutinied betrayed Russia.
Even as Putin spoke, 180 Russian military and security forces at a border post in the Voronezh region refused to interfere with the actions of Wagner’s PMC and laid down their arms.
Prigozhin responded on Saturday, telling the president he was “wrong” to accuse him of treason.
He added: “No one will surrender at the request of the president, the FSB or anyone else.”
“Because we don’t want the country to live in corruption, deceit and bureaucracy.”
