His father, Yule Kilcher, was a Swiss immigrant who escaped the turmoil of World War II and became a homesteader, a filmmaker, and a politician. His mother Ruth Weber was a poet, writer, and active member of the Homer community. He has seven siblings Atz Kilcher,  Mossy Kilcher, Stellavera Kilcher, Sunrise Sjoeberg, Wurtilla Hepp, Fay Graham, Catkin Kilcher Burton.

Otto joined the show in 2011, along with his older brother Atz Kilcher and their extended family. Since the debut he has been a regular cast member and has appeared in over 105 episodes as of 2023.  The show follows their daily struggles and triumphs as they hunt, fish, farm, and survive the long and cold winters. Otto showcases his talents and knowledge as he fixes and builds anything that the family needs, from machines to houses. Injuries and the accident: 

Otto’s lifestyle is not for everyone as he faces many challenges and dangers, such as harsh weather, wild animals, and limited resources. This is the one of the reason Kilcher family work hard year-round to grow their farm, raise livestock, collect food, repair their cabin home and store enough reserve for winters. However, not every time it has gone as planned as they have seen a fair share of accidents and injuries. Like back in 2015, Atz Lee had a near-fatal fall from a cliff. In 2022, Otto found himself at the recieving end of an unfortunate accident as he was mauled by an ox during heavy snowfall. Due to bad weather helicopter could not come in and Otto had to be transported in an emergency ambulance of Homer Hospital. He had punctured lungs, and broken several of his ribs according to the video shared by Alaska The Last Frontier official Facebook account. In the video Otto is seen in the hospital bed and says “not doing well.” Since Otto has been discharged and returned to Homestead in Homer Alaska.
