NSW election 2023: Anthony Albanese returns to cameraman to delve into ‘democratic’ sausage

Anthony Albanese awkwardly turned his back on the cameramen before going into a sausage roll after becoming embarrassed during a visit to a polling station.

The Prime Minister made the bizarre gesture as he drove to a polling booth in the Ryde electorate in Sydney’s north-west on Saturday.

He had turned up to support Labor candidate Lyndal Howison in the New South Wales election and decided to end his visit with a sausage roll.

Mr Albanese appeared to become self-conscious about his food as cameramen crowded around him.

His political associates have already been mocked for the way they ate the election’s favorite snack.

Former Labor leader Bill Shorten was ruthlessly pilloried when he bit off the side of his sausage roll in 2016, while Peter Dutton clumsily ate a Dagwood dog at a Brisbane carnival in 2022.

Mr Albanese tried to avoid the same embarrassing fate by holding a paper plate in front of his sausage roll.

“They’re going to try to get shot, it’s not going to happen,” he said.

Mr Albanese then turned his back on the cameramen before taking a big bite of the sausage roll.

Ms Howison found the humor in the situation and stood in front of the cameramen to block their view.

Labor MP for Bennelong, Jerome Laxale, laughed as he tried to shield Mr Albanese with his blazer.

Mr. Albanese seemed to pull off the perfect bite despite making a big fuss about it.

NSW Labor leader Chris Minns was busy spending his morning mingling with voters at Panania Public School in Sydney’s south-west.

He managed to spare a moment to stir the pot by revealing the unusual way he was enjoying his sausage roll.

“I’m going controversially with mustard and tomato, I’m afraid that might put off a few voters,” he said.

“I don’t know, I worry now.”

His reveal came as the Democracy Sausage website chronicled the best place to get a snag while voting.

Meanwhile, chef Josh Niland is offering a sizzle of sausages with white bread, tomato jam and grilled onions for $16 at outlets in Waterloo and Paddington, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Mr Perrottet is seeking a fourth consecutive term for his Liberal-National coalition while Mr Minns hopes to bring Labor back into government for the first time in 12 years.

The opposition leader admitted he was ‘deeply superstitious’ and made no changes to his routine on Election Day morning.

“So same breakfast, same coffee at exactly the same time,” he told the Today Show on Saturday morning.

“I did a workout at exactly the same minute. Yes, I’m deeply superstitious.

Mr Minns revealed he managed to get a good night’s sleep for the first time in a long time.

“I don’t know if it’s a good or a bad omen,” he said.

“We are in the pits bright and early. I encourage everyone to get out and vote for local candidates. It’s time to change.’

Mr Perrottet appeared calm, revealing he had texted Mr Minns the day before wishing him well and had texted his predecessor Gladys Berejiklian.

“We’ve been texting each other and you know she’s been very supportive,” he said.

“We obviously worked very closely together in my previous role as Treasurer for five years.

“She was a great premier and it was our team over the last decade that really took NSW from worst performing economy to strongest.”
