A years-old missing person case has been solved and a local sheriff’s number one fugitive has been arrested in one fell swoop.
Newoker Adrianne Hurt, 45, is charged with murder in the 2019 death of Shawn Jackson, her then-boyfriend, according to a news release from the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia.
On the last day of July that year, Hurt and the deceased man’s son, Nicholas Jackson, filed a missing person’s report for the missing father. In August 2019, human remains were interred in a shallow grave in Jefferson County, Alabama. Law enforcement later determined those remains belonged to Shawn Jackson – thanks to the dead man’s fingerprints, clothing and tattoos.
The remains were discovered by the side of a road by citizens on a walk, according to AL.com. The burial work is said to have been so poor that the dead “protruded from the ground”.
For years, however, the case dragged on.
“It was later discovered that Mr. Jackson had been caught having an affair,” the CCSO said in its press release. “SP. Newoker Hurt and the victim argued outside the mistress’s house, returned home and fought all day until night.
The younger Jackson reportedly told investigators he was aware of the argument – but both parties appeared to have calmed down by nightfall. After that, the 17-year-old fell asleep. When he woke up the next morning, Hurt told the boy that his father had left them.
Although details of the subsequent investigation are scarce, Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen said that on April 20, the Clayton County Police Department gathered enough evidence to arrest and charge Hurt and his brother from a litany of crimes. They included malicious murder, possession of a firearm while committing a crime, tampering with evidence and covering up another person’s death, officials said.
According to the sheriff’s office, area police determined that while Shawn Jackson slept the night he disappeared, his abandoned lover shot him three times in the head. She then reportedly called her brother, Shrron Stephan Hurt, to help dispose of the body.
Newoker Hurt was arrested at her apartment in Atlanta. She is being held at Clayton County Jail.
Shrron Stephan Hurt is serving time in federal prison in Huntington, West Virginia, for unrelated charges, officials said.
“The Elite Fugitive Squad are the best hide-and-seek players out there, and they find everyone,” the CCSO said in their press release. “As a result, criminals now have to think again two, three or even four times before committing a crime in Clayton County.”
