New Delhi:
A 36-year-old man died after his two-wheeler was reportedly run over by a speeding car near Moti Bagh metro station in west Delhi in the early hours of Sunday, police said.
Ajay Gupta, who ran a grocery store, was on his way home when he was run over, they said.
The car was driven by a 28-year-old woman. The Ashok Vihar resident, an architect by profession, reportedly accelerated when she first hit a generator and then knocked Gupta over. She was returning from a party in Greater Kailash when the accident happened, police said.
The woman was arrested, they added.
Police received a PCR call at 4:08 a.m. regarding the accident. Upon arriving at the scene, two vehicles were found damaged on the road leading to the Moti Nagar airlift. Neither the driver of the offending vehicle nor the victim were found at the scene, Deputy Police Commissioner (West) Ghanshyam Bansal said.
The driver of the offending vehicle admitted an injured Gupta to ABG Hospital from where he was taken to ESI Hospital by his relatives. When they arrived at the scene, the police found the victim unfit to give a statement. He later succumbed to his injuries, Bansal added.
“Investigations revealed that the victim was returning home after taking medication in the hospital while the woman was returning home from a party,” the official said.
Gupta is survived by his wife and two children, who live in Basai Darapur. His family members told police that Gupta left the house late at night to get medicine, he said.
The police registered a case under sections 279 (reckless driving or driving on a public road), 337 (injury by an act endangering the life or personal safety of others) and later section 304 A ( causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
Gupta’s body was sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for an autopsy, police said.
