While Kit Connor offered the caveat that Netflix’s other “Sex Education” series feature a bisexual male character, the performer still underscored the importance of making that experience the focus of “Heartstopper.” “. “You know, this show is very focused on that,” he said. “For example, one of the biggest storylines is Nick exploring his sexuality.”
Although female bisexuality has been portrayed often in popular media, male bisexuality is much more underestimated. With that in mind, it’s easy to see where Connor is coming from with his assertion, though he acknowledged that even a show like “Heartstopper” can’t necessarily make everyone feel included. “I guess one of the challenges with a show like this is that it’s never a one-size-fits-all thing,” he said.
“We’ve really tried our best to be as inclusive and representative as possible…but at the same time, everyone’s experience in life is different,” Connor continued. “We’ve done our best to represent that and create a safe space for the queer community in particular.”
Given that “Heartstopper” has already been renewed by Netflix for a second season, fans can no doubt expect even more positive queer portrayal when the series returns. Hopefully this time around the streamer doesn’t torment the cast with more water-based milkshakes.
