Mehta’s career includes different jobs at many law firms. He worked at Latham & Watkins law firm as an assistant for a year (1997 – 1998). Then he assisted Judge Susan P. Graber at the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for another 1 year (1998 – 1999). After that, he worked at Zuckerman Spaeder, LLP (a law firm) as an assistant for 3 years (1999 – 2002). Later, he was an assistant attorney at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia for 5 years (2002 – 2007).
Mehta went back to work at Zuckerman Spaeder for another 7 years (2007 – 2014). From the year 2010 to the year 2014, he was a partner there. He helped people with legal problems in both regular and serious cases in state and federal courts. When he was working there in the private sector, he also helped a person named Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who used to be in charge of the International Monetary Fund.
Mehta decided that the accounting company Mazars must give its records of Donald Trump’s finances in May 2019, from before he was president to the House Oversight Committee. This was because the committee had asked for them. He explained in a 41-page paper that Congress can look into possible illegal actions by a president, even things that happened before and after they became president. Trump’s personal lawyers will try to challenge this decision.
In July 2019, Mehta supported the pharmaceutical companies Merck & Co., Eli Lilly & Co., and Amgen Inc. He stopped a rule made by the Trump administration. This rule wanted drug companies to show the prices of their medicines on TV ads. The rule was a big part of the president’s plan to make prescription drugs cost less. The rule wanted to make things clear. But Mehta said that only the Department of Health and Human Services, with approval from Congress, could make the big drug companies tell people about prices in TV ads.
In the year 2020, Mehta became the main judge in the antitrust case called United States v. Google LLC. Then, on June 1, 2021, Chief Justice John Roberts chose Mehta to work in the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Mehta has been in charge of many cases connected to the January 6 United States Capitol attack. He’s overseeing the criminal trial of Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes for seditious conspiracy. He’s also managing three lawsuits against Trump and some of his friends. In these cases, a few members of Congress and two police officers are asking for money because they say they got hurt physically and emotionally during the attack.
On February 18, 2022, Mehta said a lot about what he thinks. He said Trump can’t say he’s completely protected from lawsuits. He explained that the things Trump did weren’t just part of his job as president. Mehta also said there’s enough reasonable proof to think Trump might have worked with organized groups to use any means, like violence, to change the 2020 election results. Because of what Mehta said, the case can keep going. The people who brought the case want papers, interviews, and other proof from Trump and some members of the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys. But Mehta didn’t let a few others, like Rudy Giuliani, Donald Trump Jr., and Representative Mo Brooks, stay in the case.

On July 31, 2014, Mehta was chosen by Pres. Obama to be a US District Judge. This was for the US District Court in Washington, D.C. He was picked for the job after Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle left on June 3, 2014. Mehta talked to the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary about his job on September 17, 2014. They listened and talked about it. Then, on November 20, 2014, the committee agreed with his nomination. They didn’t need to vote; they just agreed. After that, on December 13, 2014, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said he wanted to speed up the decision about Mehta’s job.
On December 16, 2014, Reid took back his request to hurry up the decision on Mehta’s job. Then, the Senate decided to agree to Mehta’s job with a voice vote. Mehta got his official job papers on December 19, 2014.
