Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz spoke at the House Oversight and Accountability Subcommittee hearing to consider a Department of Energy proposal to regulate gas stoves. Then he mocked the right-wing hysteria over gas stoves.
The hearing focused on the Biden administration’s regulatory actions regarding gas ranges and other common household appliances. Moskowitz mocked bead-hungry Republicans who are more focused on those regulations than on gun violence and other important issues.
“You know, and it’s hot, and you’re in the kitchen, and you’re fixing the knobs on your beautiful stainless steel beauty,” he said. “I understand. I get the bravado.”
“We can snatch your gas stove from your cold hands or give me my gas stove or kill me,” the Florida Democrat continued. “You know, I have a six-burner double oven range that sits on legs. I mean, I miss her right now as we talk about it.”
“And so I think, because it’s a two-party system, I think when my colleagues opposite, the other parties show leadership, the leadership of our times that we desperately need, Democrats like me should congratulate them,” he said.
“And I want to apologize on behalf of the Democratic Party for deciding to protect children in their neighborhood from being shot in movie theaters, grocery stores, school churches or synagogues,” he continued. “As Democrats, we’ve clearly lost our way that we’re not focused on devices.”
“And so we finally see our friends across the aisle standing up for parents across the country as they tuck their child in at night, dress him for school in the morning, because they fear not to go home,” he said.
“My friends across the aisle are telling those parents, you can breathe a sigh of relief that the Grand Appliance Party is going to make sure your gas stove isn’t going anywhere,” he said. declared. “You may be a small business owner and you’re worried about how you’re going to pay your employees in the event of a payment default.”
“The good news for you today is that if you have to shut down your business because the country defaults, your gas stove will still be there,” he added. “And so, you know, I’m looking forward to the legislation of our time, the Device Bill of Rights that might come before this committee.”
He’s so good at it. And I say this as someone who has always wanted a gas stove.
