Graeme Souness is a Scottish former professional football player and manager currently serving as a pundit on Sky Sports. A midfielder, He was the captain of the successful Liverpool team of the early 1980s. Souness was player-manager of Rangers in the late 1980s and captain of the Scotland national team.

Graeme sold Souness to Middlesbrough for £30,000 in 1972. Graeme made his first appearance for Middlesbrough on  January 6,  1973, in a 2–1 league defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage. On December 11, 1973, Souness had his first goal in a 3–0 league victory over Preston North End at Ayresome Park. Fraeme’s tenacious style started to garner acclaim during his time at Middlesbrough. His first season with the team saw Middlesbrough finish fourth, two places, and 14 points short of promotion.

In n May 1973, Jack Charlton was appointed Middlesbrough manager and this was his first managerial post. One of Jack’s first signings was experienced former Celtic midfielder Bobby Murdoch, a fellow Scot whom  Graeme later cited as an important influence in the development of his playing style. In 1973–74, ] Promotion as champions of the Second Division followed. Graeme’s influence was demonstrated  after he scored a hat-trick in the season’s final fixture, an 8–0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday.

He almost sparkled a riot after placing a large Galatasaray flag into the center circle of the pitch of arch-rivals Fenerbahçe. Galatasaray had just beaten them in the Turkish Cup final on 24 April 1996. The iconic image of Graeme planting the flag drew comparisons with Turkish hero Ulubatlı Hasan. The latter was killed as he planted the Ottoman flag at the end of the Siege of Constantinople. This earned  Graeme the nickname “Ulubatlı Souness”
