Frankie Dettori missed out on a record fifth win at the Dubai World Cup but there was a valuable consolation prize when he appeared at the farewell meeting – a third straight win in the Dubai Turf over Lord North .

Dettori’s mount in the $12 million World Cup, Country Grammer 2022 winner, was a weary force heading home straight after using too much energy early on in an attempt to cancel a difficult draw.

Dettori, 52, who will retire at the end of the year, was finally a spectator as Japan’s Ushba Tesoro delivered a blistering run to clinch the £6million top prize.

It was a different story for Dettori on Lord North, trained by John and Thady Gosden, who traveled smoothly across the Dubai turf before being rocketed into the lead by a yard.

Dettori dropped his whip, but Lord North still missed out on a three-quarters winner of the £2.6million top prize.

On an emotional day at Meydan Racecourse, Dettori said: “I’ve come up with some decent rides and to have one on the board in this beautiful place that has been my home for so many winters is really special.

“It’s my farewell season and it’s a great job for the team to come back with this horse and win this race for the third time. I was so confident that I lost my whip 300 (meters) outside.
