For the first time, Durango offers an e-bike rebate program

DURANGO, Colo. – For the first time, the City of Durango is offering an e-bike rebate program to its residents and students.

The city said the program has two goals: first, to encourage the use of e-bikes as an alternative form of transportation to cars, and second, to provide a low-cost option.

This program is open to all Durango residents, students, and people who work in the city.

Applications will remain open from April 17 to May 12 at 5 p.m. Once completed, the person will be able to receive a voucher that they can use to buy the electric bike and then obtain a discount. Click here to apply for the program. Or, you can pick up a paper application at the Durango Public Library, located at 1900 E. Third Ave., or City Hall at 949 E. Second Ave.

Applications are not first come, first served.

The city says anyone interested in this shouldn’t buy the bike before submitting the request, as the discount cannot be applied to pre-purchased bikes. After the program window closes, applicants will be alerted if they have received a coupon and other instructions on purchasing a bike.

Once you have the voucher, it can be redeemed for $300 at a participating local bike shop. There is a $150 post-purchase cashback rebate if purchased elsewhere. Refunds for income-qualified applicants range from $500 to $1,500 depending on their income level.

The city allows e-bikes on the Animas River Trail, Goeglein Gulch Trail, and other sidewalks and roads. E-bikes are not allowed in open spaces in the city.

Although Durango is a relatively small town in Colorado, its cycling community is thriving.

It offers over 2,000 miles of cycle paths and hundreds of miles of road for cyclists to explore.

According to the city, some of the most popular road bike routes in Durango include the 20-mile Trimble Loop, the 26-mile Elmore Loop, and the 35-mile Wildcat Canyon Loop. Plus, it has a plethora of mountain bike trails.
