An Idaho woman shot and killed her infant son before turning the gun on herself, according to Shoshone County Sheriff Holly Lindsey. Citing police, CBS affiliate KREM reported that the late suspect, 33-year-old Elizabeth Lawley, was pregnant.

Deputies responded at around 8:27 p.m. Wednesday at 152 King Street in Wallace, Idaho, regarding the report of a death, Lindsey wrote on Facebook. They found Lawley and his 2-year-old son dead from gunshot wounds. As part of the preliminary investigation, investigators determined that Lawley likely killed her son and then herself.

“To be honest, in my 19 years of service for Shoshone County, I have never seen the SCSO so dark, so devastated; we shared lots of hugs and lots of tears,” the sheriff wrote. “Today has been an extremely difficult day for the family, for our office and for this community. And I can only imagine what the family is going through. As Sheriff, I am obligated to share the news with the citizens of Shoshone County, but I cannot in good conscience make the family suffer any more by reporting this incident further, so this will be our last comment regarding this tragedy.

Law enforcement has not suggested a motive behind the deaths or detailed a timeline that led to them.
