Early Sunday morning in Sandy, a police officer shot and killed a man. The incident happened at 11640 South 1020 East around 1 a.m.
The Sandy Police Department issued a press release saying the officer was looking for a man who may have been going through a mental health crisis and may have considered suicide.
The officer located the individual walking and at one point the man posed a threat, prompting the officer to fire his weapon.
The man who died at the scene was identified by family members as 33-year-old Dylan Murphy.
The police officer involved in the incident suffered no injuries.
The shooting is currently being investigated under Salt Lake County Officer Critical Incident Protocol, and the officer has been placed on paid administrative leave.
