DIY expert shares six jobs to ‘never’ try to avoid costly ‘repairs and damage’

Adkwik DIY expert Tim Warren said: “As with any weekend, some people like to use their days off to get some work done around their homes.

“While there are many relatively simple and easy DIY jobs, there are a few that you should never try yourself and always hire a professional.”

1. Plumbing

The pro explained, “While it can be tempting to install things like radiators, showers, bathrooms and kitchens to save money, these jobs can easily go wrong.

“It can lead to expensive repair bills and damage, so it’s best to avoid it.” Many bathroom fixtures result in tubs and showers not being sealed properly, leading to serious leaks.

Another problem people may encounter is that a bathtub is not secured in place, which can cause it to move or even fall through the floor.

2. Strip the paint

The DIY expert said: ‘Depending on the age of the paint, this can potentially pose health risks.

“Paint jobs that were completed before the 1970s may have used lead-based paints, meaning it’s best to get a specialist to do it safely.”

3. Install a dishwasher

Appliances such as dishwashers need to be connected to both water and electricity, which means installation can sometimes be a tricky process.

A professional will have the right tools and experience to install the device and make sure it won’t leak or get damaged.

4. Roof repairs

A roof protects you from the elements, but only if installed or repaired correctly, so this one should be avoided at all costs.

Tim continued: “Regardless of how good your balance is, one misstep on a roof can quickly lead to a fatal fall.

“Professional roofers can safely investigate problems without risking further damage, such as roof collapse.”

5. Knock down a wall

It might seem easy enough to pick up a hammer and do this job yourself, but there are essential checks that need to be done first.

One wrong move can destroy a load-bearing wall and cause objects to collapse, including the ceiling.

If you’re looking to have a load-bearing wall removed, experts at Checkatrade said it could cost around £1,250 for a single door.

For Brits looking to create a large open space, this could be pushed up to £1,750, but it’s essential.

6. Cut down trees

Tim explained: “Large trees can cause a number of problems to neighboring homes, but they require specialist removal as it is not a simple task.

“Cutting a large trunk or branch incorrectly can result in damage to your neighbour’s property. There is also a risk of falling yourself as well as branches injuring people on the ground.

A professional arborist will know exactly how to control the felling of a tree, with the experience and tools to do the job properly.

The DIY pro added: ‘Before attempting any DIY jobs, make sure you have the right tools and protective gear. If you don’t feel completely confident or are worried about your safety, it will always be better in the long run to call in a qualified professional.
