A preschool teacher was reportedly arrested during the children’s nap, with authorities saying she and a man murdered a person found shot dead on the side of a highway. The Santa Cruz California Sheriff’s Office identified her as 22-year-old Diana Ornelas. She and co-accused Dennis Novoa, 27, were arrested on Wednesday.

Deputies said they were called on April 11 around 7 p.m. regarding a body on a hill on Highway 9 near mile marker 3.56. The autopsy determined that someone had shot victim Oliver Waterwall, 24, to death. According to the sheriff’s office, investigators conducted interviews and viewed surveillance footage. They claim that Novoa and Ornelas murdered Waterfall.

“Dennis and Diana were known to Mr. Waterfall,” the deputies wrote, remaining vague about the relationship between the victim and his alleged killers. “The motive for the homicide is believed to be personal in nature.”
