Her very first hosting job was at KSDK an NBC affiliate in ST. Louise in 1995. Tuner hosted Show Me, St. Louis, from joining till 2001 when she left the station.
In 1988 when she was 23 years old, She contested at the Miss Arkansas Pageant, a state preliminary competition for Miss America, and was named first runner-up. The next year, Turner won the Miss Missouri title and received the Miss America Crown in 1990. After winning the 1990 Miss America crown, she became the third African-American to hold a national title and as of 2019 the only—Miss Missouri to be crowned.
