Joseph Crawford was born on the 20th of April, 1978 to Brian and Lennie Crawford. Born and raised in Clay, Alabama, Joseph took on the name Clayne to honor his hometown. As a young kid, Clayne was incredibly athletic and loved sports. By the time he was in high school, Clayne was a regular for the football and wrestling teams. Clayne graduated from Hewitt-Trussville High School.
After graduating from high school, Clayne set out to make a career for himself as a working actor. In 1996, he decided to leave for Los Angeles in search of more opportunities. While opportunities were far and few in between, Clayne worked as a construction worker while also making rounds of small theatres. His first credited role came in the TV series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. This was back in 1997 when Clayne still went by the name of Joseph Crawford. In 2000, he changed his name to Clayne Crawford.
After the switch, Clayne did quite well for himself and secured roles in both movies and TV series. His first appearance on the big screen came in 2001 when he was cast in the movie One Blood Planet. Since then, Clayne has made appearances in movies like, A Walk to Remember, Swimfan, A Love Song for Bobby Long, Evil Remains, Trust, Steel City, False Prophets, F8, Feel, God’s Beach, The Donner Party, The Perfect Host, Smokin’ Aces 2L Assassin’s Ball, The Baytown Outlaws, N.Y.C. Underground, A Fighting Season, Convergence, Spectral, Above Ground, Tinker, and most recently on The Killing of Two Lovers.
While Clayne’s list of movie credits is quite long, his appearances in TV series don’t fall short either. Since his first role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Clayne made appearances in CSI, Roswell, Thief, Jericho, The Barnes Brothers, Women’s Murder Club, Life, Leverage, Cold Case, Dark Blue, THe Glades, Memphis: Beat, Justified, Rectify, Graceland, Rogue, Lethal Weapon, and most recently on Into the Dark. In 2016, Clayne was honored for his role in Rectify with a nomination for TV Critics’ Choice Awards – Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Fired from the Show
While Clayne had no shortage of work, his best work to date was in Lethal Weapon. But in 2018, Clayne was fired from the show due to his bad behavior on set. In a candid podcast, Clayne revealed that he had an outburst on set with Newman which was recorded on tape. He was fired for alleged misconduct and clashes with his co-star Damon Wayans.
“This kind of shit would come up all the time and I’d go and complain. Once they had that tape anytime I complained they’d say this will come out and it will ruin your career. When the incident happened, I had to pay half my salary for that episode. I had to spend six weeks in anger management every day on my lunch break and had to be escorted from my trailer on set by a security guard. It was humiliating.”
Since then, Crawford has been trying to rebuild his career in the entertainment industry, but with mixed results.
After Lethal Weapon
One of his first projects after leaving Lethal Weapon was an episode of Into the Dark, a horror anthology series on Hulu. He played Nathan, a widowed father who takes his daughters on a road trip that turns into a nightmare when they encounter supernatural entities. The episode received mediocre reviews from critics and viewers, and did not do much to boost Crawford’s reputation.
Crawford also ventured into directing and producing with his own film, The Killing of Two Lovers. The film is a drama about a man who tries to keep his family together while separated from his wife. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2020 and received positive feedback from critics, who praised Crawford’s performance and direction. The film was acquired by Neon for distribution.
Another film that Crawford starred in was Tinker, a sci-fi thriller about a recluse who inherits a farm and discovers a secret experiment left by his late father. The film was released in 2018, before Crawford’s exit from Lethal Weapon, but it did not receive much attention or acclaim.
In 2022, he starred as Joe, a family man who decides to go deer hunting by himself and faces unexpected challenges, in The Integrity of Joseph Chambers. The movie was well-received by critics and audiences alike.
In 2023, he portrayed Tom, a criminal who tries to escape New Orleans with his brother and crew after a bank heist goes wrong, in The Channel. The movie was a commercial success and earned positive reviews for its action-packed plot and performances. Crawford was praised for his charismatic and intense portrayal of Tom.
Crawford has not announced any upcoming projects as of now, but he has expressed his interest in returning to TV someday.
