Barry Humphries state funeral details revealed

Barry Humphries will receive a state funeral in Sydney, it has been announced.

The comic legend’s family, who died in April, chose the city for the service over Melbourne, which was another option.

An Andrews government offer to Victoria was turned down by those close to the actor. The Daily Telegraph reports.

It is believed to be a joint ceremony held by the two states to send off the star, best known for her alter ego Dame Edna Everage.

No further details are currently known, with Prime Minister Daniel Andrews saying last week: ‘I cannot confirm where the service will be or where the funeral will take place.

Humphries reportedly spent years secretly battling incurable cancer before passing away last month.

The Australian actor and comedian died on April 22 at the age of 89 from recent hip surgery.

In late April, Humphries was said goodbye at a private funeral by family and friends, who made last-minute arrangements to attend after being notified just 24 hours in advance.

The private ceremony took place on Friday at the Bowral estate of his longtime friend and artist Tim Storrier in the southern highlands of New South Wales.

“It was a small affair, just family and close friends,” director Bruce Beresford said.

Also present at the ceremony were Humphries’ sons Oscar and Rupert, who had traveled from London, as well as his daughters Emily and Tessa, brother Christopher and sister Barbara.

Beresford said no speeches were given, but excerpts from some of Humphries’ favorite poems were read, including three verses from his favorite poem, The Heart of a Friend by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.

“It was very moving, very warm. Everyone was family or a close friend of Barry,” Beresford said.
