American sitcom Arrested Development, created by Mitchell Hurwitz, has been a roller coaster of laughter and dysfunctional family relationships. The show’s first three seasons aired on Fox from 2003 to 2006; seasons four and five followed on Netflix in 2013 and 2018, respectively.
Despite the series’ continued success, Arrested Development apparently won’t be renewed for a sixth season. David Cross, one of the cast of the show, confirmed the news in an interview, saying the tensions on set and between the cast were too much of a problem to warrant the show continuing.
Fans were appalled to learn of the end of the series, as they were looking forward to more clever banter, quirky characters, and quirky type of comedy.
What is “arrested development”?
The American sitcom Arrested Development was developed by Mitchell Hurwitz. Fox aired the first three seasons from November 2, 2003 to February 10, 2006, and then Netflix aired the next two seasons, seasons four and five, in 2013 and 2018 and 2019, respectively.
The Bluths are a once wealthy, dysfunctional family that becomes the center of Arrested Development. After three seasons, the show was canceled, although Netflix has since released seasons four and five. David Cross was recently asked about the future of Arrested Development on The Last Laugh podcast. He then said, “It’s over.
Cross explained the difficulties of making a sixth season, citing conflicts on set and among the cast:
I think those were all the things that led to this kind of thing becoming an issue on set,” Cross says cautiously. “It was a tough process for everyone – exceptionally tough if you’re older. And it was, you know, not good. It was not good for the actors, that’s for sure.
We didn’t know what we were supposed to do, things didn’t make sense to us,” he says. “And we were doing reshoots on things because somebody thought of a joke, you know, three weeks later, so we had to reshoot something for a story that we had no idea what was going on .”

Arrested Development Season 5 Brief Ending
The second half of Arrested Development’s fifth season is full of memorable scenes. An unexpected Fünke homage to the Golden Girls does exist, and it’s as aggressively silly as it is heartwarming. Jessica Walter’s Lucille, who plays the evil manipulator so well, gets more screen time.
Michael (Jason Bateman) does his own chicken dance for the first time. There are a lot of laughter scenes in Season 5, but there’s also a lot of melancholy. The last episodes seem to realize that it’s the end of an era.
Netflix has not specified whether or not this is the final episode of Arrested Development. The beloved cult comedy could yet return for a sixth season. If the fifth season was not necessary, a sixth would be too. The second half of Season 5 brings the story to a satisfying conclusion.
Arcs in this series are often sloppy and splattered with blue paint and alcohol, but what else would you expect? Despite featuring some of the best one-liners and callbacks in television history, Arrested Development has always been a show about a toxic family destroying itself from within. Nobody ever deserved to be happy.
