Andreescu hurt ankle ligaments after injury at Miami Open

Canadian tennis star Bianca Andreescu has said she suffered two torn ligaments in her left ankle during a recent match at the Miami Open.

Andreescu provided a status update on Wednesday on Twitter.

The 22-year-old Mississauga, Ont., injured Monday night in the second set of her fourth-round match against Russia’s Ekaterina Alexandrova.

She was moving around the baseline when she fell on the hard court and grabbed her leg in pain. She was ejected from the field shortly thereafter.

Andreescu said she has already begun rehabilitation from the injury which will likely rule her out of Canada’s Billie Jean King Cup tie against Belgium on April 14-15 in Vancouver.

“It’s hard to say exactly how long it will take, but let’s just say it could have been a lot worse,” Andreescu said.

“I’ll take it day by day and I’m optimistic that with the right work, rehabilitation and preparation, I’ll be back on the pitch soon.”
