Knott attended St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, where he graduated with a diploma. He later joined Kent State University, where he graduated with a degree in journalism. In 2018, he was inducted into the SVSM Hall of Fame, for being an All-Ohio running back and four-time letter winner in baseball.

Knott has covered Cleveland sports on WKNR and WEWS and also has a working partnership with Newsradio WTAM 1100. He served as the Browns Radio Network sideline reporter for six years from 2004 to 2010.
