The House Ways and Means Committee yesterday released testimony from two IRS whistleblowers, exposing explosive charges against the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Garland was asked Friday about recent revelations, US concerns about the integrity of the DOJ and its use as a weapon against conservatives. Garland dismissed those concerns as an “attack” on “democracy” and the DOJ.
By saying we don’t treat cases the same way, some people have chosen to criticize the integrity of the Justice Department, Garland said. “This is an assault on a fundamental institution of American democracy… There’s no way it’s true.
The press conference comes a day after explosive testimony from an IRS whistleblower revealed a number of disturbing alleged actions the division allegedly took in an effort to ‘delay’ the investigation into the president’s son .
Whistleblowers claimed Thursday that the DOJ under Biden directly interfered with the criminal investigation into Hunter. Publicly available testimony describes prolonged unwarranted delays, a lack of transparency and threats by defense counsel to “delay, disclose and deny” the investigation.
The DOJ reportedly refused to review a WhatsApp message between Hunter Biden and Chinese businessman Henry Zhao was a major issue. If the payments to the Bidens weren’t made immediately, Hunter Biden reportedly threatened to “destroy” Zhao with his father Joe Biden, who was reportedly present.
Rep. Jason Smith (R-MO) explained how U.S. Attorney David Weiss’s attempts to press charges against Hunter Biden in 2022 and 2023 failed. The DOJ was “stepping in and overriding” the investigation, whistleblowers say, despite the fact that there was a strong tax liability case surrounding Hunter Biden’s payments, according to reports.
Smith also revealed that Hunter’s lawyers received critical information about the investigation before it was ready. For example, Hunter Biden’s lawyers were given advance notice of the issuance of a search warrant for a storage facility in Northern Virginia housing his records. IRS investigators, according to the whistleblowers, faced significant internal hurdles during their investigation despite a seemingly strong record of tax liability on the payments. The testimony further alleges a lack of independence on the part of the US Attorney as well as unusual actions outside the normal scope of any investigation.
