A man is dead and another is in police custody following a suspected early morning assault in a Queensland holiday town.

Police said emergency crews were called to Hastings Street on the Noosa Heads tourist strip after reports that an 87-year-old man had been assaulted at around 6am on Sunday.

The man died at the scene before he could be taken to hospital.

A 27-year-old man has since been taken into custody and is assisting detectives with their investigations.
