2-year-old Kiaire McCoy killed himself after finding a handgun between sofa cushions

Kentwood Police say a 2-year-old child is believed to have discovered an unsecured loaded firearm and tragically committed suicide.

Jikya Reddick, the mother of the child named Kiaire McCoy, described him as a cheerful child who had a strong bond with his older brother.

Kiaire was known for his contagious laugh and his mother said he quickly won the hearts of those around him.

He was quite expressive and had a deep affection for his mother,” Reddick explained.

The family are currently making arrangements for the funeral and have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money. Reddick also mentioned that her son’s organs were donated to help save other people’s lives.

“He made the decision to take his own life and through organ donation he is now giving others a chance to live,” Reddick said.

The mother’s former boyfriend has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the incident. Markus Nevills Jr. appeared in court on Monday and now faces the manslaughter charge.

Police say the firearm involved in the shooting belonged to Nevills Jr. He is currently being held at the Kent County Correctional Facility awaiting further court proceedings. Reddick explained that the child had discovered the handgun hidden between the sofa cushions and that she was not aware of its presence until after the tragic incident.
