1 dead, at least 20 injured in shooting at June 19 celebration in Willowbrook

According to the police, a shootout occurred overnight, leaving at least 20 injured and one dead. Witnesses describe the incident as a June 19 celebration that tragically turned violent.

Some of the injured were taken to hospitals by ambulance, while others made it on foot, DuPage County Deputy Sheriff Eric Swanson said during a Sunday press briefing.

Earlier, Tri-State Fire Protection District Battalion Chief Joe Ostrander said ten patients with varying degrees of injuries, including abrasion wounds and more serious gunshot wounds, were transported to four hospitals.

Two people are said to be in critical condition. Ostrander said at least 12 ambulances were dispatched to the scene.

Witnesses said the shooting happened in a parking lot in Willowbrook, about 21 miles west of Chicago, around 12:30 a.m.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear and is currently under active investigation, Swanson said.

This incident adds to the growing number of events disrupted by gun violence, including a graduation ceremony in Virginia, an NBA championship celebration in Colorado and a birthday party in California, all of which took place over the past month.

According to Gun Violence Archive, this incident contributes to the total of 310 mass shootings in the United States this year.

This is a developing story that will be updated when more information becomes available.
